Seki - part 2

As noted in the first part of this article, it is simply impossible to leave the city of Seki off our itinerary. It is equally impossible to cover all the important events that have taken place there.

One of the most memorable experiences was a visit to Master Kanefusa Fujiwara. His clan name is followed by the number 25, which indicates which generation the master belongs to. His grandfather, Kanefusa Fujiwara 23, forged swords for Emperor Hirohito. The good news is that the master’s son has successfully completed his certification and taken the name Kanefusa Fujiwara 26. The future of the clan is thus assured. This time, it was a “dry run” visit. No practical demonstrations of forging, and we swapped the workshop for the master’s office. But no disappointment—quite the opposite. Kanefusa-san presented his latest works to us: three authentic Tanto-style swords. Enough to steal an hour of his precious time. One more souvenir photo in front of the Tokugawa shogun’s crest on the facade of the master’s house, and we’re off. We have a scheduled visit to another master’s workshop. And not just any master. It is none other than Ichiro Hattori

Unfortunately, Mr. Hattori is away, but his right-hand woman—and daughter—will be taking care of us. This charming lady loves knives just as much as she loves her Triumph motorcycle, which she proudly showed us. But at first, we felt like we were at a Michelin-starred restaurant enjoying a tasting menu. Individual masterpieces arrived at the table at reasonable intervals. A veritable izakaya in the form of a knife shop. Quickly take a photo and send it to interested parties. Hopefully we’ll be fast enough. The selection is narrowing every day. Finally, the hostess’s pride and joy. A kitchen garden where she plans to prepare refreshments for her father’s clients. So Japanese...
