Product detail

The Nippon Knives store brings you the most exclusive thing that has left the gates of Sumikama Cutlery with the KASUMI brand so far. This is a special edition of damask knives with the Japanese kanji sign, which in translation very concisely means MASTERPIECE.

The already perfect KASUMI knife blades are brought to absolute aesthetic perfectionism in this series. This can only be achieved by combining the most advanced technologies with many years of experience. It is therefore no surprise that only the best masters of Sumikama participate in the production of the MASTERPIECE edition.

As it is customary with the KASUMI brand, the core of the blade is made of premium steel VG Gold 10. This literally "knife steel" is characterized by a high carbon content, which lends the blades an extreme hardness /60-61 degrees Rockwell scale/. But hardness is just one of the primary requirements for a perfect blade. It must also be durable and especially be able to sharpen up to the so-called razor sharpness. Therefore, VG Gold 10 also contains manganese, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium and cobalt. And exactly adding cobalt, which requires special tempering of steel, is a well-kept secret of the steelworks in Takefu.

Handmade knives KASUMI MASTERPIECE will enchant you with a beautiful drawing of their damask blades. This is achieved by forging 16 layers of special steels, which are then nailed to the core of VG Gold 10. The resulting 33 layers create the image of playing waves of the Sea of Japan. The blade is completed with a yellow kanji emblem, which secures its membership in the exclusive TAKUMI club. As knives in this class have a service life of tens of years, the manufacturers made the handles from a highly resistant heat-treated resin called micarta.

KASUMI knives of the MASTERPIECE edition are sold only in some specialized stores. Nippon Knives has the honor of being one of them.

About producer

The brand KASUMI belongs to Sumikama Cutlery Mfg. Pvt.Ltd. Its current owner represents the third generation of this knifemaking family. Mr. Katsumi Sumikava found a very appropriate name for his knives - KASUMI. Not only because it resembles his name, but mainly because their damascus blades resemble the outlines of mountains under a misty sky. In Japanese culture, you often come across names that are direct references to specific objects or phenomena. And this is one of the examples.

Sumikama Cutlery is located in the city of Seki in Gifu Prefecture. It is an important center of Japanese cutlery, a kind of analogue of Solingen in Germany or Sheffield in England. Admittedly, with a richer history. The first blacksmiths began to settle here at the end of the 13th century. The attraction was peat reserves, rich iron ore sand, fresh water and the proximity of important rivers. These ideal conditions caused more than 300 forges to operate in Seki between 1300 and 1500. The quality of Seki swords soon gained an unshakable position, and the best katanas of samurai warriors usually came from this area.

Today, the production of KASUMI brand kitchen knives is overseen by master Kanefusa Fujiwara himself, a member of the 25th generation of the clan, famous for the production of katana swords. You can find the proud name of the region on every KASUMI brand blade.
